The role of a floor screeder
A floor screeder is a skilled specialist who prepares subfloors and installs screed layers—cementitious, anhydrite (calcium sulphate), fast-drying, or polymer-modified—to achieve the required levels, tolerances, and surface finish. Their work ensures consistent flatness, strength, and compatibility with underfloor heating and the specified floor coverings.
Typical Duties & Tasks
- Site assessment & planning: Surveying substrates, checking levels, moisture, and load requirements; confirming screed type and build-ups.
- Surface preparation: Mechanical cleaning, laitance, bitumen and adhesive removal, crack repairs and priming where required.
- Setting levels: Establishing datums with laser levels, tripods, battens, and levelling pins for accurate thickness and falls.
- Mixing & delivery: Batching on site or coordinating pump-delivered screed; managing water/cement ratios or supplier specifications.
- Screeds for underfloor heating systems:
- Installation: Placing, compacting, dapping/striking off, and ruling to achieve the specified Surface Regularity (e.g., SR1–SR3).
- Curing & protection: Advising on curing regimes, early traffic limits, and protection from rapid drying or contamination.
- Handover: Drying guidance and aftercare recommendations for follow-on trades.
