UK based floor screeding contractors
Types of floor screed
Traditional cement floor screed
Traditional cementitious screeds are a reliable, cost-effective choice for many jobs. They are mixed on-site or delivered pre-blended and provide strong, long-lasting performance. Traditional screed is often chosen for heavy-duty areas and where compatibility with a wide range of finishes is required.
Typical uses: domestic floors, garages, workshops, and structural renovations.
Fibre-reinforced floor screed
Fibre-reinforced screeds integrate synthetic (or sometimes steel) fibres into the mix to improve tensile strength, reduce shrinkage cracking and speed up installation by removing the need for traditional steel mesh in many situations. Fibre-reinforced screed is an excellent choice where improved toughness and early-life performance are needed.
Typical uses: domestic refurbishments, light-commercial floors, areas subject to dynamic loads.
Liquid screed
Liquid or flowing screeds (often calcium-sulphate or specially formulated cementitious flowing mixes) are pumped into place to create a very flat surface with minimal labour and excellent finish. Liquid screed is especially popular where quick turnaround, very good flatness and compatibility with underfloor heating is required.
Typical uses: underfloor heating, new build apartments, large commercial areas and fast-track projects.
Underfloor heating & floor screed
Underfloor heating pairs exceptionally well with a correctly designed screed. Liquid screeds often provide the best thermal conductivity and fastest heat-up times, but fibre-reinforced or traditional screeds can also be specified to suit the pipe layout, heating type and finish. When we design screed for underfloor heating we consider:
- Required screed thickness and coverage over heating pipes.
- Thermal conductivity and response time for the heating system.
- Compatibility with floor finishes and required movement joints.
- Commissioning and gradual heat-up procedures to avoid thermal shock during curing.
Why floor screed ?
- Leveling: Corrects uneven subfloors, providing a flat base for floor finishes.
- Protection: Safeguards underlying pipes and electrical systems embedded in the floor.
- Insulation: Enhances thermal insulation, particularly beneficial in underfloor heating systems.
- Durability: Adds strength and stability to the floor structure.
- Smooth Finish: Creates an even surface, ideal for laying final floor coverings.
Drying times, walk-on times & practical guidance for floor screed
Drying and walk-on times for screed vary by type, thickness, ambient conditions and ventilation. Below are typical guidance ranges — exact times depend on site conditions and the screed specification:
- Traditional cement screed — Generally requires longer drying. Expect several weeks to achieve dryness suitable for sensitive floor coverings; light foot traffic may be possible earlier (often within a few days) but full drying for adhesives and final finishes can take significantly longer.
- Fibre-reinforced screed — Often reaches usable strength faster than traditional mixes, with improved crack resistance. Walk-on times for light traffic are frequently within 24–72 hours, but full drying for some floor finishes will still depend on thickness and environment.
- Liquid screed — Designed for rapid, even drying and exceptionally flat finishes. Many liquid screeds offer shorter waiting times to receive floor coverings compared with traditional screeds; rapid or fast-drying variants can be ready for coverings in days rather than weeks in suitable conditions.
Important: The above are typical ranges. Final drying and walk-on times must be confirmed against the specific screed product datasheet, installed thickness and site conditions (temperature, humidity, ventilation). Liberty Floor Screeding will recommend the appropriate screed type and advise precise drying and walk-on schedules during the site survey.
“Whether using traditional screeds for carpet or advanced liquid screeds for LVT and engineered wood, choosing the right screed ensures longevity and performance.”
